Lions drop season opener in close game on the road against Centre

DANVILLE, KY - After having their first four games postponed due to weather, the Mount St. Joseph University Lions traveled to Centre College to take on the Colonels in their 2018-2019 season debut. The Lions came out with an early lead but fell 2-3 in the bottom of the 9th inning.

On the mound to start off the season was senior Alex Wagner (West Chester, OH / Lakota West) who pitched 3 innings before turning the reins over to Nathan Renner (Pleasant Prairie, WI / Tremper) who pitched the next four innings. During Wagner's three innings he faced 11 batters and collected 4 strikeouts while only allowing a run and a hit. Renner faced a total of 17 batters and only allowed one run on four hits. Jason Fischer (Cincinnati, OH / Colerain) came on to finish out the game, pitched one inning, faced 6 batters while giving up a run.

The Mount took an early lead scoring a run in back to back innings. In top of the 2nd Jose Bustamante (Austell, GA / South Cobb) singled awarding him the RBI as Colin Crowe (Mason, OH / Mason) scoring the first run for The Mount. The top of the third was a similar story with Ryne Poli (Cincinnati, OH / Elder) singling up the middle and driving in Tyrell Anderson (Cincinnati, OH / Western Hills) extending the lead from one run to two. The two run lead was short lived as the Colonels scored in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Both teams went scoreless in the two innings to follow but was broken when the Colonels put another run on the board in the bottom of the 6th inning. The 7th and 8th innings came and went with neither team being able to edge the other out. It came down the the last inning of the game which looked promising for The Lions as Hunter Collins (Middletown, OH / Monroe) made it all the way to third base on a walk, passed ball and wild pitch with only one out in the inning. Unfortunately the next two batters struck out and were sent back to the dugout. Trying to take the game into extra innings The Mount battled but with a Colonel on first and second The Lions couldn't prevent a throwing error that let the winning run score finishing the game with a final score of 2-3.

The Lions next game will be a double header on Saturday, March 2nd and a third game on Sunday, March 3rd against DePauw University at Marge Schott Stadium (University of Cincinnati) at 12 PM and 3 PM on Saturday and 12 PM on Sunday.
