The College of Mount St. Joseph scored early and often on Saturday night at Anderson University as they recorded a 55-28 win, their third straight victory. The win keeps the Lions atop the HCAC with a 3-0 mark (tied with Rose-Hulman) and sets up a conference showdown at Franklin College (2-2, 2-0 HCAC) on Oct. 12. The Lions led by a 48-9 score at the half, and their 55 points scored is the second straight week the team has scored 50-plus points in a game. The Mount used a lot of personnel in the game, starting early on as they jumped out to leads of 21-0 and 42-3 in the first half.
David Fulcher (Cincinnati, OH/Mason) got the scoring started for the Lions, racing 17 yards to paydirt with 10:25 showing on the first quarter clock. Shane Kelly (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) booted the PAT kick to give the Mount a 7-0 lead, a lead they would never relinquish. Mount quarterback Caleb Watkins (Middletown, OH/Middletown) hooked up with wide out John Peters (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) on a 63-yard pass play later in the quarter, and Leonard Riston (Cincinnati, OH/Withrow) returned a punt 50 yards for a score, and Kelly hit both conversion kicks, giving the Lions a commanding 21-0 lead with just under two minutes to play in the first half. Anderson put their first points on the board just before the end of the quarter on a 38-yard field goal. The Lions would add four more TDs in the second quarter, including Watkins' second scoring pass of the day and Fulcher's second TD run, unanswered, as they went on to a 48-9 lead at the intermission.
The Lions took advantage of numerous Anderson penalties in the first half, along with Ravens' drives that ended in either a lost fumble, interception, and missed field goals. The Mount had the ball on eight possessions in the first half, scoring touchdowns on the first seven and having the half end on the final possession.
Both team substitute freely in the second half, with the Lions adding their lone second half score with 11:10 left in the game when quarterback Jason Stinebaugh (Springboro, OH/Springboro) scored on a two-yard run.
Watkins finished eight-for-12 for 151 yards, two TDs and no interceptions, while Peters led three Mount players with three receptions for 82 yards a score. Charles McCall (Miami, FL/Miami Norland) led a balanced rushing attack with 40 yards - on four carries. The Mount defense recorded three interceptions, including two by linebacker Brent McCleerey (Mooresville, IN/Monrovia). McCleerey also had team-high eight tackles. Konnor Blevins (Cincinnati, OH/Lakota West) added a 43-yard fumble recovery for a TD. The Lions forced and recovered three Anderson fumbles. The Mount also had four sacks.
