The Lions take part in the Frostburg State University Invitation

Location: Bobcat Stadium (Frostburg, MD)

The Basics:

The Mount St. Joseph University men's soccer team ventured to Frostburg, Maryland to take part in the Frostburg State University Invitational where they started the weekend off with a 1-0 win over Bridgewater College. In the second match of the weekend against host school Frostburg State, both teams weren't able to find the goal and tied after two overtimes.

How It Happened:

Match 1

The match started with great defensive efforts, with neither team able to make a strong play on the ball. The Lions were able to bring the pressure late in the first half with a goal in the 30th minute on a free kick by Seth Freppon (Cold Spring, KY / Newport Central Catholic). In the second half Bridgewater turned up the pressure as they were desperate to find the back of the net, but the Lions defense and goalie Conner Spivey (Florence, KY / Dixie Heights) were able to contain the attacks. After setting the tone with the late first half goal the Lions were able to walk away with a 1-0 over Bridgewater to start the weekend and the season off strong.

Match 2

In the second match of the tournament the Lions would square off with the host school Frostburg State University. The teams both showed off their defensive prowess the entire match. The Lions again got an outstanding effort from their goalkeeper as pair of early saves by Spivey again set the tone. The chances to score were limited for both teams throughout the first half. The second half told the same story, with the Lions unable to find the goal due to an impressive defensive effort by Frostburg. The Lions though matched the defensive energy throughout. During the two overtime periods both teams were hungry for a goal and continued to take constant shots at each other but were unable to find the back of the net. After 120 minutes of action the match ended in a 0-0 tie.

The Lions had multiple standouts on the weekend, Freppon was the lone goal scorer for the Lions as his free kick strike aided in the 1-0 win over Bridgewater. The entire defensive unit for the Lions was outstanding in the tournament. Lead by Spivey between the pipes the Lions defense was able to keep two more than capable offensive teams off the scoreboard over 210 minutes of play.

The Lions were well representing on the Frostburg State Invitational All-tournament team, as those honors were given to Conner Spivey, Seth Freppon, and Joseph Glisson (Cincinnati, OH) for their outstanding efforts on the pitch.
