Mount St. Joseph looked to start their season off in the right way, and they did indeed. The Lions had a strong showing in Springfield, OH as they were able to come home with two wins over the weekend. They were able to beat Penn St.-Altoona 3-1, and Lincoln Memorial 3-0.
Mount St. Joseph vs. Penn St.-Altoona:
The first match of the day for the Lions was against Penn St.-Altoona. The first set was much contested as the score remained close throughout. Penn St.-Altoona was able to take the lead 10-9 and after that, never gave it back to the Lions. After back and forth competition, Penn St.-Altoona was able to take the first set 25-22.
The second set continued to stay exciting as the score was close the entire time. It all came down to the end of the set where Penn St.-Altoona was up 23-22. The Lions where able to get a clutch kill by Alex Vohland (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) to tie the game up. They then won the set after two consecutive attack errors by Penn St.-Altoona 25-23.
The third set was close as well. It all came down to the final couple points after being tied at 22. Adam Williams (Chicago, IL/Mt. Carmel) was able to get a big kill assisted by Nathan Herdeman (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) to put the lions up and ultimately win the set 25-22.
The Lions won the final set 17-25 after controlling early with explosive offense. They maintained the lead the whole time. This gave them the overall win in the match over Penn St.-Altoona 3-1.
Mount St. Joseph vs. Lincoln Memorial:
The second game the Lions looked as if they had caught their rhythm. They took the lead early against Lincoln memorial to control the pace throughout the first set. Lincoln Memorial was able to keep it close, but the Lions came out with the win after Andrew Chisholm got the kill from an assist by Nathan Herdeman. The Lions won the set 25-23.
The Lions continued to show their dominance during the second set. After a many great defensive plays the Lions were able to control the lead and outlast the Railsplitters to win the set 25-20.
The Third set, the Lions showed their conditioning. Being tired, the Lions were still playing at a high level. They were able to take over the third set with multiple kills by Adam Williams to give the Lions the win 25-19. This gave the Lions the overall win in the match 3-1.
Alex Vohland was the offensive spark for the team in both of the games this weekend. He led the team in kills in both games with 17 kills versus Penn St.-Altoona and 14 kills versus Lincoln Memorial. Adam Williams was able to make an impact versus Penn St.-Altoona after recording 13 kills in the Lions win 3-1. Nathan Herdeman had an impressive showing on offense recording 29 assist against Lincoln Memorial and 42 assist versus Penn St. Altoona.
The Lions will travel to Owings Mills, MD next Friday 1/27 for a double header against Stevenson at 4:00 pm and Wilson at 6:00 pm.
