Mount St. Joseph traveled to take on Franciscan University. The Mount jumped to a 10-0 lead at the beginning of the game, but Franciscan kept it close after taking the lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lions outscored Franciscan 16 to 4 to take the lead before halftime with the score at 33-22. In the second half, Mount St. Joseph just looked to maintain their lead. They were able to beat Franciscan with a final of 68-49.
How it happened:
The Lions started the game off with a 10-0 run to jump in front in the first quarter. Franciscan was able to fight back and take the lead at the end of the first 18-17. The Mount played outstanding defense in the second quarter outscoring their opponent 16-4. Mackenzie Marcum (Mason, OH/Kings) was able to help push the Lions in front with two timely three pointers to increase the lead. This put the team ahead going into halftime with the score at 33-22. In the third quarter the Lions looked to hold their lead. Lainee Studer (Pleasant Plain, OH/ Little Miami) led the way, scoring 7 points in the quarter. The Lions were able to maintain the lead going into the final quarter 51-37. The fourth quarter was dominated by the Lions. Nave' Winn (Lexington, KY/ Tates Creek) was able to come off the bench to score 6 points to add to the Lions lead. Studer was able to total 13 points in the second half, as she totaled 6 in the fourth. The Mount defeated Franciscan with a final score of 68 to 49.
Lainee Studer was able to make an impact of the game on both sides of the ball. She led the team in scoring with 22 points and was also able to record 5 assists. On the defensive end, Studer led the team with 5 steals and 9 defensive rebounds. Maddie Haberthy (Cincinnati, OH/ Mother of Mercy) was also able to have a productive day with 11 points, 3 steals, and 4 assists.
The Lions (7-3, 3-1) will take on Wilmington (5-3, 2-2) in the Harrington Center on Saturday, 12/30. Tip off will be set for 1:00 PM.
