Cincinnati, OH – The Lions took the court at Cintas Center on the campus of Xavier University to take on UC Clermont in the fourth annual Lauren Hill Tip-Off Classic. The match was in memory of the late Lauren Hill and was an opportunity to spread awareness for DIPG while raising money for cancer research. Lauren was a basketball player at the Mount who developed a rare form of pediatric cancer and rallied the world around her cause. In the Lions fourth annual match they made a statement and easily defeated the Cougars of UC Clermont 79-34.
The first quarter was a close battle as neither team was able to pull away. Both teams traded points and finished the first quarter 17-16. Lainee Studer (Pleasant Plain, OH / Little Miami) led the Lions in the first quarter with six points, three rebounds, and two steals. Starting the second quarter neither team was able to find the bottom of the net. UC Clermont would take a 18-17 lead but the Lions caught fire, going on a 16-2 run with 2 minutes remaining. The Lions held their opponents to six points in the quarter and would take a 38-22 lead going into the half.
The Lions continued their stellar play in the second half, once again holding their opponents to only 12 points in the last two quarters combined. Alehia Tucker (Covington, KY / Holy Cross) led the Lions on offense in the third quarter, scoring 11 of her 15 points in the third quarter. Going into the fourth quarter the Lions held a 63-28 lead over UC Clermont but kept the pressure on the cougars going into the final minutes. The Lions held strong and defeated UC Clermont 79-34 to improve their record to 1-1.
Studer was the leader for the Lions on both ends of the court, almost earning an unconventional triple double with 19 points, nine rebounds, nine steals and six assists. Maddie Haberthy (Cincinnati, OH / Mother of Mercy) was another offensive weapon for the Lions, earning 19 points and six rebounds. The Lions next match will be Wednesday, November 28th at 7:00PM at the Harrington Center on the campus of Mount St. Joseph University.
