Mount St. Joseph women's volleyball team splits matches in opener

LOCATION:  Kardatzke Center (Anderson, Indiana)

THE BASICS:  

Mount St. Joseph (1-1) traveled to Anderson University to play in the Raven Invitational.  The Lions dropped their first match to Albion (2-0) 2 sets to Albion's 3 before rebounding in their second match of the day to defeat Kalamazoo (0-2) in straight sets, 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

The Lion attack in their first match was spearheaded by Jessica Wilgenbusch and Riley Brunner, who registered 21 kills and 10 kills respectively.  Kama Charles anchored the defense against Albion as she was responsible for 25 digs.  The Lions took a 2 sets to 1 set lead over their opponent before dropping the fourth set 25-27 and then the fifth set in a 15-17 nail-biter.   

Wilgenbusch and Brunner were on display again in the second match as the pair were responsible for 11 kills and 10 kills respectively.  Briana Looney was also a major contributor against Kalamazoo, notching 11 kills.  Cailey Plemmons led the Lions with 8 digs in their second match and Kama Charles added another 6.  Mount St. Joseph cruised to big wins in the first two sets before winning 25-20 in the third set, earning the first victory of the season for the Lions.

STANDOUTS:  

Over the course of the doubleheader, Jessica Wilgenbusch was able to knock home a combined 32 kills while Riley Brunner notched 20 kills.

Kama Charles was the defensive standout for the Lions.  She led the team with a combined 31 digs on the day.

UP NEXT:  

The Lions are set to play another doubleheader tomorrow (Sep. 3) in the second day of the Raven Invitational at Anderson University.  They square off against Waynesburg tomorrow at noon, followed by Olivet at 2 p.m.
