Lions Stay Strong and Defeat Miami-Hamilton

MIAMI, OH - The Mount St. Joseph University Lions traveled to Miami University Miami-Hamilton to take on the Harriers in a single game matchup. The Lions would get an early lead but would end up narrowly defeating the Harriers 7-5.

Nathan Renner (Pleasant Prairie, WI / Tremper) made his way to the mound to start off the battle for The Lions. He pitched the first 4 innings and faced 16 batters. The Harriers were able to get 3 hits off of Renner but none of them turned into a run. Both sides were unable to earn a run until The Lions broke the silence in the top of the 3rd inning. The first run of the game came from Simon Schaefer (Cincinnati, OH / St. Xavier) reaching 1st base on a fielding error by Miami-Hamilton's first baseman, allowing Tyrell Anderson (Cincinnati, OH / Western Hills) to advance to second and giving Roman Rothwell (Monroe, OH / Monroe) enough time to cross the plate. The next run came home off of a Trey Siciliano (Cape Coral, FL / Oasis) single to the shortstop pushing everyone around the bases and Anderson into home.

The Mount's big inning was the top of the 4th inning where they snagged another 3 runs to increase their lead to 5 runs. The first run of the inning came when the bases were loaded and Schaefer got hit by a pitch pushing everyone around the bases and Garrett Hogan (Hamilton, OH / Badin) was able to walk home. The 2 other runs came from the same play when Brandon Shelton (Cincinnati, OH / Northwest) singled up the middle driving in Rothwell and Anderson.

The 5th inning was scoreless for both teams but The Lions would make a change in their pitching and Jacob Hughes (Cincinnati, OH / LaSalle) would take over for Renner. Hughes would pitch the next 2 innings and faced 9 batters. The Harriers found a way to get 2 hits and a run off of Hughes in the bottom of the 6th inning. The Mount also able to score in the top of the inning when Schaefer singled to center field and Rothwell crossed the plate one more time.

In the bottom of the 7th inning Chris Honebrink (Cincinnati, OH / Roger Bacon) would come in and find himself having a tough outing. He pitched 0.1 of an inning and faced 6 batters. Miami-Hamilton would make a huge comeback attempt in this inning getting 2 hits off of Honebrink but they were able to get 4 runs across the plate closing the gap. Wyatt Myers (Waynesville, OH / Waynesville) would come in to finish out the inning and to pitch one more. During his 1.2 innings at the plate he faced 6 batters giving up 2 hits and struck out 1 Harrier on the way.

The Lions would earn 1 more run in the top of the 9th inning when Siciliano put down a sac bunt and Schaefer would come in to score. The Mount would bring in their closer Hogan to finish out the game and hold off the Harriers offense. Hogan would face 4 batters and only gave up 1 hit and allowed The Lions to finish the game on top with the final score 7-5.

The Lions will be back in action when the go on the road to play a three day series, March 22nd, 23rd, and 24th, against the Scots of Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee. Continue to check for more updates on the 2019 season!
