Mount St. Joseph (14-8, 11-4 HCAC) was unable to hold onto a big second half lead against Transylvania University (10-12, 9-6 HCAC), losing 65-62. That coupled with a Defiance win finds the Lions sharing first place in the HCAC.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mount St. Joseph struggled with foul trouble, as the Lions saw 3 starters pick up 2 fouls in the first half. All three spent large portions of the half watching from the sideline. Even with the foul trouble the Lions were able to go into the break with a lead.
The second half opened with the Lions clinging to a 6 point lead. They extended that lead to 12 with 12:50 to play. The Lions though were unable to put the Pioneers away as Transy cut the lead to 6 point with 5 minutes to play 57-51. A big three by Parker Stansbury for the Pioneers made it a one possession game with 2 minutes to play. A minute later the game was tied at 60 after a Pioneer lay-up. Joel Scudder put the Lions ahead by 2 with 30 seconds to play, only to have Transy hit a three at the other end. The Lions had the ball with 17 seconds left to play, and an opportunity to win the game.
A win though was not in the cards on this night as the Lions turned the ball over on the final possession, and Transylvania sealed the victory at the free-throw line, escaping with a 65-62 victory.
Jordan Henry gave the Lions quality minutes off the bench, leading the team in scoring with 15 points and 5 assists.
The Lions will travel on Saturday to Franklin College (2-20, 2-13 HCAC). The game is schedule for a 3 p.m. start.
