Lions defeat Wilmington behind Finley's 26 points

CINCINNATI, OH-- The Mount St. Joseph men's basketball team was eager to get the taste of the past weekend out of their mouth against Wilmington. For much of the game it looked as though the Lions would continue searching for the seasons first win for at least another few days. Some late games heroics though, especially on the defensive end, allowed the Lions to taste victory for the first time in the 2017-18 season.

The Mount got off to another slow start in this game off runs. As the Quakers of Wilmington College opened on a 6-1 scoring run. The Lions would begin to fight back eventually tying the game at 21 with 5:54 to play in the first half. Wilmington would close the half on an 16-8 run to take a 37-29 lead into the break. Andrew Finley (Cincinnati, OH/Walnut Hills) led the way for the Lions in the first half with 15 of his game-high 26 points. As a team the Lions shot a respectable 45.5 percent from the field but they only connected on 20 percent of their three-point attempts. The free-throw line continued to plague the Lions as they shot just 53.8 percent from the charity stripe in the half.

The Lions opened the second half on an 8-0 run to tie the score at 37, with Erik Edwards (Cincinnati, OH/Roger Bacon) scoring five of the eight points during the run. Wilmington would answer back with a 9-2 run of their own to push the lead back to seven points. From that point The Mount would hold serve, keeping the game within reach never allowing Wilmington to stretch their lead past seven points. The Lions would finally regain the lead with just 1:30 to play 67-65 on a Jordan Henry (Lexington, KY/Bryan Station) three-point play. The would not relinquish the lead again, icing the game from the free throw line. With seniors Finley, Edwards and Henry combining to go 8 of 10 from the free-throw line over the games final minute. The Lions held on to win the game by a score of 75-72.

Finley returned to his 2016-17 form in this one, scoring a game-high 26 points. Edwards added 16 points and 7 boards in the frontcourt.
