Lions open HCAC play with win at Manchester

N. MANCHESTER, Indiana - The Mount St. Joseph University men's basketball team opened their 2018-19 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference slate with a trip to N. Manchester, Indiana on Saturday. The Lions relied on their best shooting effort of the season, and four players reaching double figures to top Manchester 71-56. 

The Mount shot a season high 57.4% (27-47) from the field in the win, as well as an outstanding 92.3% (12-13) from the free throw line. Which helped to overcome the fact that they were outrebounded 30-24. 

They were led in the game by freshman Devin Young (Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham) who came off the bench to score a career-high 20 points. Young was 8-for-14 from the field in the game, drilling a pair of three pointers, he was a perfect 2-for-2 from the free throw stripe. He also aded five rebounds, an assist and a steal for his most complete game in Lions uniform thus far. 

Joining Young in double figures were three other Lions. Senior Shaun Sullivan (Lousiville, Ky./DeSales) pitched in a career-high 19 points, and a team-high 6 rebounds, Mitch Morehead (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) and Cedric Woods (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) also scored in double figures with 12 and 16 respectively. 

The game was extremely tight in the early going, as there were 8 ties and 6 lead changes in the first half. The Spartans held their largest lead at the 12:04 mark of the first half, with a 15-10 lead. With just 3:37 to play in the first half, the square was all squared again at 26, and The Mount outscored Manchester 6-2 to close out the half up 32-28.

The Mount opened the second half with a quick 15-4 run pushing their lead to a game-high 15 points with just over 13 minutes to go. The Spartans would cut the lead down to only five on a couple of occassions but the Lions never lost control again. 

The Mount will continue HCAC play on Wednesday as the welcome Rose-Hulman (3-3, 1-0 HCAC) into the Harrington Center. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 PM tip-off, tune into for all of your live game coverage.
