DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph University men's basketball team traveled to Defiance, Ohio to take on the Yellow Jackets in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup. As has been the case throughout the HCAC season the Lions played well, but in the end fell 78-74.
The Lions dominated the game in the first half, racing out to a game-high 20 point lead with just under a minute to play in the opening 20 minutes. They gained the lead in large part to sophomore Devin Young (Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham) who had 18 of his game-got points in the first half. Young also added seven first half rebounds to go along with two assists. They also a big contribution off the bench from Joel Day (Cold Springs, Ky./Campbell Co.) and Cedric Woods (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) who combined for 17 first half points.
During the last minute of the first half Defiance scored five unanswered points to close the first half trailing 49-34. The Yellow Jackets then opened the second half with a 6-0 run to cut the Lions lead to just nine points. Tanner Clos (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell Co.) answered with a three to extend the Lions lead back to 12 at 52-40. Defiance quickly answered with another sevent point run, to cut the Lions lead down to just five points.
The Mount continued to lead as the teams exchanged buckets, over the next 8 minutes of action. Defiance took their first lead of the game with 9:16 left to play, as Avonte Jones burried a three to take the 62-61 lead. Over the final 9 minutes of action the lead changed hands four times.
Defiance extended their lead to a game-high seven points, with 3:07 to play. The lead was quickly trimmed to two, and the Lions had the ball with an opportunity to get the win. But it was not meant to be as the Lions fell 78-74.
The Lions will head to Lexington, Ky. to take on the Pioneers of Transylvania on Wednesday, with the game scheduled to get underway at 7:30 PM.
