Mount St. Joseph defeats Bethany to grasp first victory of the season

Location: Schueler Field (Cincinnati, OH)

The Basics:

Mount St. Joseph took on Bethany College this past Saturday in an intense contest.  Both teams matched up very well against each other which made for an exciting game.  The Lions were able to strike first and take the lead early over the Bison's.  Bethany was able to have a strong second period and gain the lead before the half with the score at 5-3.  Mount St. Joseph would take back control as they held the Bison's scoreless in the second half to secure their first win of the season with a final score of 9-5.

How it Happened:

The Lions were able to get to the net first to set the tone against Bethany.  Sean Burke (Covington, KY/ Covington Catholic) and Jesse Purdy (Lexington, KY/ Dunbar) were able to team up on the offensive end to take the 2-1 lead after the first period.  Bethany was able to get their offense going in the second quarter.  They were able to score four unanswered goals to take the lead over the Lions before halftime with the score at 5-3.  Mount St. Joseph came out of the locker room determined to take over the game.  Purdy was able to explode offensively to get to the net three times in the third period.  Seth Poirier (Somerville, OH/ Talawanda) was also able to score as the Lions took back the lead going into the final period 7-5.  The Lions defense was outstanding as they were able to hold Bethany scoreless in the second half.  The Lions were able to add two more goals in the fourth quarter to seal the victory with a final score of 9-5.

Standouts:

The Lions thrived on the offensive end as many players were able to contribute to the big win.  Burke and Purdy were both able to record hat tricks in the contest.  Burke finished the game with 3 goals while Purdy was able to get the ball to the net 5 times.  The Mount also had a great day on defense.  They were able to shut down Bethany and hold them scoreless in the second half to maintain the lead and secure the victory.
