Lions Get First Win in Close Battle on Senior Night

CINCINNATI,Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph University men's lacrosse team hosted the Ravens of Anderson University on senior night. The Lions battled through a back and forth game and were able to come out on top and clinch their first victory of the season with a final score of 10-9!

The Mount came out fighting behind the lead of their four seniors in their final home game of the season. The Dynamic duo of Kevin McClanahan (Madeira,Ohio/Madeira) and Tony Behler (Cincinnati,Ohio/Elder) would make the first connection of the game and being the first team to make their mark. Anderson made their way off the faceoff and answered back within the minute. McClanahan would take back the lead and then some getting a pair of unassisted goals taking The Lions lead to 3-1. The Ravens would go on a late run scoring three goals and taking the lead away before the quarter came to a close.

In quarter number two The Mount and Anderson would alternate goals totaling two each. The Ravens would go first followed by Chucky Lipps (Cincinnati,Ohio/Elder) who recorded his first collegiate goal off of an assist from McClanahan. The Mount would give up one more goal in the first half but would have the last word as McClanahan would collect another unassisted goal before the halftime bell rang, leaving The Lions trailing the Ravens 5-6.

As the second half began both teams would be at a standstill for more than half of the third quarter until the Ravens would score taking their lead to two goals. Behler would keep The Mount competitive as he would go in and score an unassisted goal that would bring the score to 6-7 going into the final quarter of the game.

The Lions came alive in the fourth quarter after Anderson would strike first once again. Behler would grow his goal total as he blasted the ball past Anderson's goalie for a pair of unassisted goals. With those two goals The Lions were back in it and the score was all tied up at eight. The Mount would regain the lead as McClanahan would get an assist from Lipps, taking his total to five goals. The Ravens would score once again and tie the game but The Mount would have the last word as Behler nailed a shot from a TJ Ahrens (Cincinnati,Ohio/St.Xavier) assist. This would give The Lions a 10-9 lead that they would fight to keep for the remaining three minutes of the game. The buzzer sounded and The Lions found themselves on top and recorded their first victory of the season!

Senior goalie Austin Lowery (Indianapolis,Ind./Roncalli) collected 12 saves throughout the entire game and keeping The Mount in the game and leading them to a senior night win. Before the start of the competition the team recognized the four seniors Behler, Lowery, Matt Stecht (Erlanger,Ky./Holy Cross) and James Aumiller (Columbus,Ohio/Dublin) for all that they have done for the program over their years on the team.

The Lions will be back in action on Saturday, April 20th as they travel to Hanover College to take on the Panthers in a conference matchup. Continue to check MSJSports.com for more updates on the 2019 season!
