Lions drop a close match to Defiance

CINCINNATI, Ohio - On a rainy Saturday afternoon your Mount St. Joseph Lions hosted the Yellow Jackets of Defiance. The Lions came into the game after a devastating loss to Bluffton in double overtime and hoped to bounce back and get a big conference win. Last year the Lions traveled to Defiance and were able to pull out a 3-2 victory.

Both teams came out of the gate Saturday a little slow. The Mount held up good defensively since their offense hadn't found their grove yet. But come the 27th minute Defiance's Christian Rennie was able to sneak one past the keeper to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead. But it didn't take long for the Mount to fire back with a goal. After a couple shots from Defiance the Mount found themselves on the offensive side. The Defiance defender passed the ball back to his own keeper and as he did that the keeper picked the ball up with his hands giving the Mount a free kick inside the box. Senior Justin Ives (Florence, Ky./St. Henry) took the kick but the keeper made a very good save as the ricocheted off his hands and to the feet of freshman Daniel Good (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) which was put away for a goal to tie the game 1-1. As the first half came to a close Defiance was able to score another goal with only 2 minutes remaining in the half to give them a 2-1 lead heading into the half. After halftime the Lions came out with more of an offensive approach. After 30 minutes and no goals Defiance was able to extend their lead to 3-1. Defiance crossed the ball into the box then ricocheted off a Mount defender and found the net. But that was not it for the Lions. The Mount then flooded the goal with shots and in the 86th minute one shot finally found the net. The Mount was given a free kick from about 35 yards out and was taken by Justin Ives as he crossed the ball in freshman Cole Mericle (Lima, Ohio/Lima) was able to get a foot on the ball and shortens the lead to 3-2. The Lions then had another corner kick to potentially tie the game with only 1 minute remaining but they were not successful and the final score was 3-2. The Lions fought hard to try and equalize but weren't able to find the net.

The Lions will be back in action this Wednesday October, 30th as they will host the Panthers of Hanover College. Kickoff is set to begin at 7PM. Continue to check out MSJSports.com for more updates on the rest of the Lions 2019 season!
