The Mount St. Joseph Lions looked strong this weekend as they took on some MCVL competitors. The first game was on Friday, 2/17 against Adrian College. The Lions made quick work of the Bulldogs winning the match in three straight sets. Next the Lions would travel to take on Olivet College. The Lions would continue their hot streak to beat Olivet in three straight sets as well, and end the weekend with two MCVL wins.
Mount St. Joseph vs. Adrian:
The first set started off well for the Lions. After taking the lead in the set, Mount St. Joseph dominated the court. The explosive offense for the Lions gave them the comfortable lead at 22-16. The Lions were able to finish the first set after a kill from Brett Cooper (Cincinnati, OH/ La Salle) to give the Lions the set 25-16.
The second set started off tight. After trading points for a while the two teams were tied at 6-6. Adam Williams (Chicago, IL/ Mt. Carmel) was able to execute a couple kills to pull the Lions in front, with a score of 11-7. Mount St. Joseph continued to build on their lead with tremedous teamwork from the Lions players. The Lions won the second set 25-18 to give them the 2-0 lead.
The third set was similar for the Lions. They were able to jump to a big lead at 17-7 as the Bulldogs struggled to contain the hitters for Mount St. Joseph. Adrian fought hard to try and get back into the set and avoid the sweep, but the Lions were able to finish the job. After a kill by Nathan Herdeman (Cincinnati, OH/ Elder) the Lions were victorious, winning the final set 25-23.
Mount St. Joseph vs. Olivet:
The Lions looked to carry the momentum from the win on Friday into their next game against Olivet Saturday 2/18. The Lions started off strong in the first set. They established a lead over Olivet with a score of 17-10. After starting off so behind, it was hard for Olivet to catch back up. Mount St. Joseph was able to take the first set with a score of 25-19.
The second set was dominated by the Lions. With kills being produced by so many players, Olivet's defense couldn't figure out a way to stop them all. The exciting offense by Mount St. Joseph carried them to another win in the second set with a final score of 25-16.
The Lions looked to end the match in the third set with a win. After the score being extremely close for the first half of the set, the Lions began to pull away. They were leading 21-15 as they looked to finish off Olivet for another conference triumph. A kill by Nick Melbardis (Indianapolis, IN/ Cathedral) sealed the win and finished the set with a final score of 25-19 as the Lions win again, 3-0.
Many players were able to produce on the offensive end against Adrian College. Nine players from Mount St. Joseph's roster recorded at least 2 kills each. Brett Cooper was able to lead the team with 6 kills on 12 attempts with 7 blocks in the Lions win over Adrian 3-0. In the game against Olivet, Adam Williams lead the team with 8 kills on 16 attempts. This was also a well offensively played game by the Lions with ten players with at least 2 kills. Zach Kuebler (Columbus, OH/ Hilliard Darby) was also able to make an impact on defense, leading the team in digs with 9 in the Lions 3-0 win over Olivet.
The Lions will compete at their home tournament next weekend. The Lions will play Nazareth on Friday 2/24 at 8:00PM. Then will play against Dominican and Cal Lutheran on Saturday 2/25 at 12:00 PM and 7:30 PM in the Harrington Center Gym.
