CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Mount St. Joseph University men's volleyball team welcome the Thunder of Trine University to continue Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League play. In the Lions first home game in over a month they defeated the Thunder with ease in three straight sets.
The Lions took an early lead to start the first set but Trine quickly found their way back into the match. The Thunder kept the match close despite multiple Lions runs. Josh Kabel (Centerville, OH / Alter) went on a three point service run in the final points to separate the Lions and middle hitter Jack Spohn (Columbus, OH / Olentangy) finished the first set with a kill. The Lions won the set 25-22. The Lions controlled the tempo in the second set, taking an early lead. The Lions led 22-16 when Trine started to make their comeback and were able to bring the score to 24-23. The Lions won the set 25-23 after a Trine service error. The Lions continued their momentum into the third set and didn't miss a beat. The Lions dominated the Thunder after Darrell Swanson (Las Vegas, NV / Arbor View) went on a 13 point service run to put the match out of reach. Swanson finished off the set with a big kill to give the Lions a 25-7 set three victory.
The Lions were led by Rey Sanchez (Arvada, CO / Ralston Valley High School) who earned seven kills while dishing out 16 assist. Spohn also chipped in five kills and three aces while hitting .556.
The Lions will continue their home stand this weekend with two more conference matches. On Friday, March 22nd the Lions will host Olivet College at 7:00PM.
