MONTGOMERY, AL - The Mount St. Joseph Lions were back in action on Sunday in another double-header. The Lions faced off against the Crusaders of University of Dallas in game one and The Hawks of Huntingdon College in game two. This was The Lions second meeting with both teams this weekend.
The Lions faced yet another close game with the Crusaders of University of Dallas as the Crusaders were able to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh and send the game into extra innings. The Lions were able to prevail in the top of the eighth inning, scoring 3 runs, providing enough to defeat the University of Dallas 7-5.
Beginning the game on the mound for The Lions was freshman Alaina Maddy (Cincinnati, OH / Northwest) who earned her first collegiate start of the season. Maddy pitched 3 innings for The Mount before handing the ball over to Kendall McCool (Brookville, IN / Franklin County) who went on to pitch 2.2 innings, allowing 3 hits and no runs, while recording one strike out. Brianna Kauf (Orrville, OH / Orrville) closed the game for The Mount, allowing 6 hits and 2 runs during her 2.1 closing innings.
The game was off to a quick offensive battle through the first 3 innings as The Lions led the Crusaders 4-3 entering the top of the 4th. The Lions started the game off strong in the first inning, earning two RBI's off of a Brooke Otto (Brookville, IN / Franklin County) double and a sacrifice fly by Savannah Sturgill (West Harrison, IN / East Central). In the second inning the Lions continued to strengthen their lead as Alehia Tucker (Covington, KY / Holy Cross) came up to bat with 1 out remaining. Tucker doubled to left center field, allowing one run to score. Otto was next up to bat as she singled up the middle and one more run scored. The Crusaders were able to find some momentum as they scored three runs between the 2nd and 3rd innings. It seemed as if The Lions had secured a close win through their strong first two innings until the bottom on the 7th inning when the Crusaders were able to score 1 run to tie the game 4-4 off of a single to right field, forcing the game into an extra inning.
One more inning was all The Lions needed to secure their third win of the season. In the top of the 8th inning Tucker stepped up to bat for The Lions with two outs and bases loaded. Tucker singled to right center field, earning three runs as three lions made their way across the bases to bring the score to 7-4 in favor of The Lions. The Crusaders would try to come back, scoring 1 more run, but would ultimately fall victim to The Lions, allowing The Mount to win 7-5.
In game two of the day, The Mount faced off against the Hawks of Huntingdon College to end the weekend's festivities down in Montgomery, Alabama. Kamryn McCool (Brookville, IN / Franklin County) would get the start for The Lions in their second game of the day. McCool would go on to pitch 4 innings, only allowing 3 hits and recording 6 strikeouts.
The Lions were unable to continue their offensive power in their second game of the day, only scoring 1 run.
