CINCINNATI, OH - The Mount St. Joseph Lions hosted the Spartans of Manchester University in the fourth annual Mount Madness double header. The Lions coming off of a tough conference loss earlier in the week. The Mount was able to bring themselves together to secure a conference victory 63-57.
The Lions have hosted Mount Madness in honor of Lauren Hill who was a member of the Mount St. Joseph's women's basketball team. She was diagnosed with DIPG, an inoperable brain cancer, before even stepping on the court. All the proceeds from Mount Madness go to The Cure Starts Now a fund that helps find a cure to all cancer but focuses on DIPG.
This was an important game for the Lions unfortunately they had a tough time securing their footing in the first quarter. They finished the first quarter down 16-10 and a long road ahead of them. In the second quarter they could not be stopped, they found a way to double their first quarter score and then some. It was the last minute three pointer by Maddie Haberthy (Cincinnati, OH / Mercy) that secured the lead at halftime with the score 32-31.
The Lions were able to keep and grow their lead throughout the third and fourth quarters nearly doubling their score once again while holding the Spartans to 13 points in each quarter. This gave the Lions the ability to walk out of the Harrington Center that day with their heads held high knowing they were taking home a conference victory in honor of Lauren Hill.
Two Lions were able to achieve double digits. Lainee Studer (Pleasant Plain, OH / Little Miami) was a powerhouse scoring 17 points, getting 13 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 blocks and a steal. Haberthy was also able to steal 17 points for herself in the game along with 7 rebounds and 7 steals. Senior Hayley Hudson (Ross, OH / Ross) made her back onto the court after an early season surgery and was able to get 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocks in her first game back.
