Lions goalie breaks team record during 12-8 victory

CINCINNATI, OH - The Lions of Mount St. Joseph University hosted the Scots of Alma College on a windy Sunday afternoon. The Lions dominated the offensive side of the field and only lost the lead one time early in the first half. The Mount persevered and secured their first win of the season with the final score of 12-8.

In the first half The Lions were the first to make their mark on the scoreboard with senior Joy Glacken (Cleves, OH / Taylor) getting an unassisted goal to take the first lead. The Scots quickly went up scoring three goals in two minutes and The Lions found themselves down by two points. Soon after The Lions would go on a five goal run with Megan Dancer (Springboro, OH / Springboro) starting it off with a goal off of a free position shot. The next three goals came from a single Lion within three minutes of one another. That Lion is freshman Olivia Hocker (Liberty Township, OH / Lakota West), her first goal was assisted by junior Brianna Brannon (Cincinnati, OH / Seton), the second came just 21 seconds later off of a fast break and the third to secure the hat trick came from a free position shot. Dancer struck again just a minute later for her second goal of the game. The Scots had the last word in this half but The Lions finished the half with a narrow lead of 6 goals to 4.

The Mount knew they had to keep their foot on the gas in the second half in order to finish on top. This was apparent when Brannon busted off the draw and scored her first goal of the season within nine seconds of the half starting. The Scots were the next to score followed by Glacken scoring off of a free position shot. The teams continued to go back and forth with Alma scoring again before Glacken was able to grab herself a hat trick off of an unassisted goal. Once again Alma found a way to get another goal but this time The Lions were able to get two goals before Alma scored again. The two goals were both unassisted and within 30 seconds of one another. The first of the two goals was scored by Gabriella Halfhill (Liberty Township, OH / Lakota West) followed by Hocker adding onto her hat trick. Alma scored one more time before Hocker snatched her fifth and final goal of the game. The time ran out and The Mount took home the victory with the final score of 12-8.

Goalie Sydney Vinel (Cleves, OH / Seton) helped keep The Mount in the game by having 23 saves throughout the game. During this victory Vinel broke the team record for most saves in a single game. The record which previously was held by Coach Paige Apel from her time as the Lions goalie.

The Lions will be back in action on Wednesday, March 13th on Schueler Field as they take on the Cardinals of Otterbein University. Continue to check for more updates on the 2018-2019 season!
