FRANKLIN, Indiana - The Mount St. Joseph women's soccer team (13-2-3, 7-1-1 HCAC) closed out the regular season with a 4-1 win over Franklin (8-9-1, 5-4 HCAC) on the road on Saturday.
The Mount opened the scoring in the 33rd minute as senior Kaylan Gruber (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison) found the back of the net for the 14th time this season. Freshman Etelle Nfor (Frankfort, Ky./Western Hills) delivered her seventh assist on the season on the goal.
As the first half entered the final minute, the Grizzlies found an equalizer. Samantha Stone found the back of the net in the 44th minute to settle the half-time score at 1-1.
Franklin came out of the half-time break with momentum, after tying the game with 38 seconds to play in the first half. The Lions though would shut that momentum down quickly and decisively. Gruber put the Lions ahead for good in the 52nd minute, with her 15th goal on the year. Freshman goalkeeper Megan Gilpin (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Luers) was awarded the assist on the goal. She drilled a goal kick down the field, it split two Franklin defenders and Gruber raced in for the goal.
Just more than a minute later the Lions double their lead as Paige Mersmann (Florence, Ky./Boone Co.) collected a rebound and drilled it into the back of the net for her 8th goal of the season. For good measure Jodie Weimer (Cleves, Ohio/Taylor) added one more goal in the 80th minute, her 10th of the season. The assist went to Madeline Rechel (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison) it was her 7th assist on the season.
The Lions thoroughly dominated play in the second half, registering 19 shots to Franklin's 7.
The Lions will play host to Transylvania University (13-4-2, 6-2-1 HCAC) again in the HCAC tournament on Wednesday. This time the game will be held at Mount St. Joseph's Schueler Field, the game is scheduled for a 7:00 PM kick-off.
