Delhi, Ohio – The Mount St. Joseph University women's soccer team welcomed the Yellow Jackets of Defiance College to Schueler Field in Saturday's Heartland Collegiate Conference match-up. The Lions entered the contest with an 8-5-2 overall record and a 4-1-1 conference record, while the Yellow Jackets came in with a 4-12-1 overall record and a 0-6 conference record. The Lions entered the game coming off a three game winning streak, defeating the Beavers of Bluffton University Wednesday.
The Lions continue to come out hot against their opponents. The Lions would take multiple shots before they were able to find the back of the net in the 12th minute. Senior Paige Mersmann (Florence, Ky./Boone County) would receive a cross from Madeline Rechel (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison), which she was able to head down past the goalkeeper and into the net to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. In-between the Lions first and second goal, they would have nine different attempts before junior Keri Siebert (Lawrenceburg, Ind./East Central) would get her first goal of the year. Siebert was able to dribble through and beat her defender before taking a shot and sending it straight into the back of the net in the 40th minute. Entering halftime the Lions lead the Yellow Jackets 2-0.
The Lions would continue to make opportunities in the second half. In the 64th minute the duo of Madeline Rechel and Paige Mersmann would do it again. Rechel would receive a splitting ball through the Yellow Jackets defense, dribble towards the goal, and pass it across the 6-yard box to an oncoming Mersmann who was able to get a foot on it to beat the defender and goalkeeper to score the Lions third goal of the match.
With time ticking down, not much action would happen after the Lions third goal until the final 10 minutes of the game. In the 83rd minute the Yellow Jackets would get their only goal of the game. Just two minutes later, the Lions would answer back as sophomore Brooke Chaille (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) would find herself in a one on one scenario versus the goalkeeper in the 84th minute. Chaille would receive the ball over the top in the center of the field, use her speed to beat the Yellow Jackets defense, take a touch to the side of the goalkeeper and score on a sliding shot to place the ball into the goal and ultimately give the Lions their final goal. The Lions defeated the Yellow Jackets of Defiance College 4-1, giving the Lions their fourth win in a row. The Lions recorded 27 shots, with 15 on goal, while the Yellow Jackets only had two shots, with both being on goal during the full match.
In the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings, the Lions are currently tied for second place with a 5-1-1 conference record, and a 9-5-2 overall record, ultimately giving them 16 points in the standings.
