Hanover, Ind. – The Mount St. Joseph University women's soccer team traveled to take on Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference competitor Hanover College Panthers on Wednesday afternoon. The Lions entered the cold, rainy afternoon game with a 9-5-2 overall record, and a 5-1-1 conference record, finding themselves tied for second place against Hanover College, who came into the game with a 8-5-2 overall record and a 5-1-1 conference record. Entering the game the Lions came in with a four game winning streak with hopes of continuing it as they look to enter the HCAC tournament.
With the game underway, both teams would take their chances at goal. Both the Lions and the Panthers would get multiple shots, with both teams goalkeepers making tremendous saves to keep the score line even in the opening minutes. For the Lions, sophomore goalkeeper Haylee Woebkenberg (Cincinnati, Ohio/Reading) would make multiple fantastic saves throughout the game to stop the Panthers chances. In the 16th minute, the Panthers would get a goal after getting a deflection off a save by Woebkenberg, taking the 1-0 lead.
Both teams would continue taking their chances in the remainder of the first half. Four different Lions would take their shot, but would come out unlucky with shots going wide and some important saves by the Panthers goalkeeper. Entering the half the Lions trailed the Panther 1-0.
In the opening of the second half the Lions would come out hungry for a goal, taking six shots before the Panthers could take one. Unfortunately things' where not going the Lions way and it was only a matter of time before the Panthers would capitalize. In the 66th minute, the Panthers would take a 2-0 lead over the Lions with a shot inside the 18-yard box.
After the Panthers second goal, both teams held a spectacular defense as the Lions were trying to get the ball up the field and the Panthers were trying to stop any attempt at a Lions goal. As the final minutes began to tick down, the Panthers would close out the scoring, adding one more goal to the score sheet with a shot in the 88th minute. Neither team would have any more opportunities as the final whistle blew, ultimately giving the Lions their first loss in four games.
With the loss, the Lions record currently sits at 9-6-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the conference. Saturday is the final Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season game of the year. The Lions will welcome the Grizzlies of Franklin College to Schueler Field. During Saturday's game, the Lions will honor their six seniors for the 2019 season. The Grizzlies enter the contest with a 6-11-1 overall record and a 6-2 conference record, they are currently in 3rd place with 18 points. Saturday's game will also play a big role in the decision making for the HCAC tournament. Currently, the Lions are in 4th place with 16 points in the HCAC. With a win on Saturday, the Lions will move up to third place and get to compete in the HCAC tournament. Come out to Schueler Field to help cheer the Lions onto victory in an important final regular season game.
