Location: Tomsich Arena (Gambier, OH)
The Lions traveled to Kenyon College to take part in the Kenyon College Invitational. The Lions faced Kenyon College, Denison University, and Muskingum University during the weekend. The Lions went 1-2 over the weekend, defeating Denison University for their only win of the weekend.
How it Happened:
MSJ vs. Kenyon
In the first match against Kenyon College the Lions got off to a slow start. Kenyon was able to earn a lead to start the match but the Lions would quickly counter. The Lions kept the score close but Kenyon was able to hold a lead throughout most of the set. Going into the final points Kenyon was able to capitalize on their opportunities to take the first set 25-21. The Lions brought energy into the second set by staying aggressive. After being tied for most of the set, Kenyon was able to build a lead off of a service run. The Lions battled in the final points but the deficit was too much to overcome, dropping the 2nd second 25-18. The Lions weren't ready to give up and battled hard in the third set. The Lions held the lead but Kenyon bounced back to take the third set 25-22.
MSJ vs. Denison
In the Lions second match of the weekend they faced Denison University and found a way to take an early lead. Denison was persistent but the Lions offense was too much, leading them to a 25-19 first set victory. The second set was close the whole time as neither team was able to build a significant lead. The set went into extra points and the Denison was able to earn back to back points to take the second set 28-26. After the tough loss in the second set the Lions came back with energy. They quickly pounced on Denison and were able to hold a nice lead throughout the set. The Lions would go on to take the third set quickly, defeating their opponents 25-19. The Lions kept their momentum going into the final set and didn't look back. Denison was able to close the gap in the final points but the Lions put the set away 25-20 and defeated Denison 3-1.
MSJ vs. Muskingum
In the Lions final match of the weekend they struggled to find their offense. Muskingum took an early lead and the Lions struggled to come back. The Mount wasn't able to string together any runs during the set and the deficit continued to rise. The Lions dropped the first set 25-15. The Lions struggled to contain Muskingum's offense in the set set which led to another deficit. After another tough set the Lions found themselves down 2-0. The Mount wasn't able to overcome their struggles in the third set which led to another 25-16 loss, resulting in a 3-0 to Muskingum.
Cailey Plemmons (Oxford, OH / Talawanda) and Briana Looney (Harrison, OH / Harrison) led the charge on offense with 35 and 34 kills, respectively. Karlie Schell (West Harrison, IN / Franklin County) protected the backrow, averaging 15.6 digs during the three match weekend.
The Lions will take on the Quakers of Wilmington in their next match. The match will be held at Wilmington College on 9/11 at 7PM. Check MSJSports.com for more updates on the Lions season!
