The Lions traveled to Louisville, KY to take on the Golden Eagles of Spalding University. The Lions battled in a close first set but weren't able to come out with the win. The Lions picked up their play in the next three sets to defeat the Spalding Golden Eagles 3-1.
How it Happened:
The Lions would get off to a quick lead in the first set but were countered by a Golden Eagles run. The Lions kept the score close but Spalding continued to find runs to give them a slight advantage. The Lions tied the match at 22 on a service run from Riley Brunner (Lawrenceburg, IN / Lawrenceburg). The match went into extra points and Spalding was able to capitalize on the Lions error in a narrow set one victory 26-24. The Lions wasted no time picking up their play in the second set and kept a consistent lead. Spalding would try to make a comeback late in the set but a kill from Cailey Plemmons (Oxford, OH / Talawanda) gave the Lions a victory in set two 25-18. The Lions continued their strong play in the third set to take an early 4-0 lead. The Lions capitalized on Spalding errors to keep a strong lead throughout the match. Spalding would eventually find a run late in the set but a service run from Sydney Wilzbach (Cincinnati, OH / Northwest) gave the Lions another victory 25-16. Riley Gintert (Morrow, OH / Little Miami) got the Lions off to a hot start in the final set, going on a seven point service run to give the Mount an early 9-1 lead. The Lions wouldn't look back and a kill from Briana Looney (Harrison, OH / Harrison) capped off the 25-16 and 3-1 victory for the Mount.
Looney continues to lead the Lions on offense, this time earning 17 kills and 5 blocks in the match against Spalding.
The Lions travel to Ohio Wesleyan University this Thursday 9/27 to take on the Battling Bishops. The match will start at 7PM and will be held at Branch Rickey Arena. Check MSJSports.com for more updates on the Lions season!
