LOCATION: Sommer Center (Bluffton, OH)
The Lions matched up against the Beavers of Bluffton University in a HCAC duel. The match was a five set thriller, going down to the final points. The Lions dropped the final set 15-13 in a tough match, with a final score of 3-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Lions were able to keep up with the Beavers throughout the first set, keeping the score within two points. With the score tied at 18 Bluffton was able to find back to back points which would eventually give them a first set 25-20. The second set told the same story, with neither team able to break away early in the set. The Lions were able to earn a lead on a seven point service run from Riley Gintert (Morrow, OH / Little Miami). Bluffton fought to bring the match back but the Lions were able to hold out the Beavers and took set two on a kill from Cailey Plemmons (Oxford, OH / Talawanda). The Lions continued their strong play in the third set and would hold a slight lead over the Beavers for most of the set. A block by Briana Looney (Harrison, OH / Harrison) gave the Lions a close third set with a score of 25-22. The fourth set started off close but Bluffton was able to earn a big lead halfway through the set. The Lions found themselves down 10-17 but found the strength to tie the score at 18. The Beavers cleaned up their play and capitalized on the Lions errors to go on to take the fourth set 25-21. With the score tied at 2-2 both teams had to put it all on the line. Bluffton got off to a quick lead to start the fifth set. Bluffton held the lead all throughout the set but back to back points from the Lions forced a Beaver timeout. Bluffton was able to find the floor to take the close fifth set 15-13 and the match 3-2.
Riley Brunner (Lawrenceburg, IN / Lawrenceburg) earns the LionHearted Performance for her 17 kills and 24 digs in the loss to the Ravens.
