CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Mount St. Joseph University President Dr. H. James Williams and Director of Athletics Steve Radcliffe are proud to announce that John Spinney has been named the ninth head women's volleyball coach at Mount St. Joseph.
Coach Spinney returns to The Mount after an extremely successful 12-year run at across-the-river rival Thomas More. During his stint at Thomas More, Spinney guided the Saints to six conference championships, eight NCAA tournament appearances and four NCAA Tournament Regional appearances. Under his leadership the team amassed a record of 292-79 over the past 12 years and he was recently named the 2019 NCAA DIII Regional Coach of the Year. He also spent last season as the coach of the Thomas More men's volleyball program, which was in its first season.
"We are extremely excited to welcome Coach Spinney back to the Mount to take over our once mighty women's volleyball program" stated Radcliffe "He was an important part of our program when we were among the nations very best women's volleyball teams. His success as a head coach at Thomas More proves how good of a coach he his and how lucky we are to have him."
Spinney began his collegiate coaching career at The Mount in 1993 as an assistant coach under Mary Ann Broderick. In 1994 Spinney served as interim head coach, leading the Lions to a program record 37 win and an appearance in the NAIA Regional Championship. The following year he returned to his post as assistant coach, which he remained in until leaving for Division I Fairfield University in 1997. He would spend only one year at Fairfield, despite helping the Stags to a 35-2 record, a birth in the NCAA Tournament and the staff garnering Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference staff of the year honors. After which he returned to The Mount, and over the next two seasons the Lions had record of 66-10 and appeared in the NCAA Division III quarterfinals during both seasons. Overall during his six seasons as an assistant at The Mount the Lions had a record of 204-76.
Coach Spinney, is a native of Cincinnati, Ohio and has coached numerous Cincinnati area club volleyball teams to national tournaments, including Sports Express, Team Z, Cincy Classics and NKYVC. He also spent time as the training director for both the Cincy Classics and NKYVC.

Coach Spinney and the Lions will get their season underway Friday Aug. 30, when they travel to Marrieta College for the River City Classic where they will take on Berea and Hood.
