CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Mount St. Joseph University women's volleyball team welcomed the Fightin' Engineers of Rose-Hulman to the Harrington Center on Wednesday. The Lions came into the match scuffling of late, and in desperate need of a conference win.
Going into the match Coach Spinney saw something in the Rose-Hulman attack that he thought maybe the Lions could exploit. He turned to a rarely used defensive strategy that put the onus on his two fantastic defenders, Karlie Schell (West Harrison, Ind./Franklin Co.) and Brooklyn Brunner (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick).
The Lions attack was led by Schell who had 12 kills and a .310 hitting percentage. Kara Bradley (Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham) was the only other Lion in double figures in kills with 11.
Setter Sam Buschur (Maineville, Ohio/Little Miami) led the way with 39 assists.
The defense was outstanding for the Lions as they had 74 digs, with Brunner and Schell combining for 41. They also added six blocks in the match with middle Kyla Henderson (Athens, Ohio/Nelsonville-York) registering four.
The Lions will travel to N. Manchester, Ind. on Saturday to take on the Manchester Spartans in an HCAC match.
