Softball run ends in HCAC Championship versus Transylvania

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph University softball team ended its 2019 season with a loss in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship finals to the Transylvania Pioneers by a score of 4-1.

The Lions opened their journey in the HCAC Championship with an 8-0 win over Anderson on Thursday, in which Sarah Miller (Fishers, Ind./St. Theodore Guerin) threw the first no-hitter of her college career. The win set up a winners bracket finals matchup with Transylvania, who defeated Franklin College 4-2.

During the regular season the Lions and Pioneers split a pair of games at Kinder Morgan. This time the Pioneers would come out on top, as tournament MVP Kameron Bowling stifiled the Lions the whole game. The Lions, forced into the losers bracket would have to take on Anderson again. This time the game had a trip to the finals, and another shot at the Pioneers riding on it. The Lions again were dominant behind Miller, taking down the Ravens 7-0.

The Lions would have to take down the Pioneers twice to secure the championship, and a spot in the NCAA DIII national championship tournament. Again though it would be the outstanding pitching of the Pioneers that would win the day. The Lions were held to only a single hit and a single run in the 4-1 loss.

For their outstanding play in the tournament Sarah MillerAlehia Tucker (Covington, Ky./Holy Cross) and Savannah Sturgill (West Harrison, Ind./East Central) were named to the all-tournament team.

The Lions still hold out hope to be selected to compete in the NCAA DIII national tournament, but they will have to do so as an at-large selection. The NCAA live selection show will be at 1:00 PM on Monday and can be viewed at
